By giving the original slave songs a religious identity, evangelicalism was instrumental in the development of Gospel. The joyful spiritual celebrations do indeed have a common structure with those melancholic melodies, odes to lost freedom, whose syncopated rhythms could send people into a trance. Gospel, a major evolution has gradually replaced the original songs. It can still be found today in the heart of the former French colonies in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, alongside the traditional indigenous music and dance, which had long fallen out of favour and identified with symbols of revolt and identity aspirations.
"Tambours Croisés" is an original project initiated in 2011 when for the first time it brought together musicians and singers from Martinique, Guadeloupe and La Réunion, to explore and share their respective musical heritage. Mayotte joined the project in 2012, followed by artists from Guyana in 2013. Through residences and a tour of France and Europe, artists are working to achieve a musical expression shaped by each of their original identities.
By combining Gospel songs with "Tambours Croisés", "GOSPEL DRUMS" brings together on stage two musical worlds with shared roots, like finding long lost relatives: tradition and echoes of the past then become a common language for a contemporary artistic expression.
